Valheim cover

Valheim is an open-world survival and exploration game set in a procedurally generated world inspired by Norse mythology. Playing alone or with up to nine other players, you explore dangerous biomes, gather resources, craft weapons and armour, build Viking settlements and longships, and battle powerful creatures and bosses in order to prove yourself worthy of Odin. Progression is tied to exploration and defeating the Forsaken, with each biome introducing new enemies, resources, crafting possibilities and challenges. From the peaceful Meadows to the frozen Deep North, players can build, farm, sail, fight and explore the tenth world at their own pace.

Can You Market a Game with Zero Following?

The primary purpose of this analysis is to dispel the common misconception that indie game developers require a large social media following to achieve commercial success on Steam.

  • A large social media following is not a prerequisite for a successful game launch, as many hit titles originate from developers with zero initial audience.
  • The perception that a large following is required is a cognitive bias known as the availability heuristic, where developers mistake post-launch success for pre-launch audience size.
  • Valheim serves as a primary example of this phenomenon, as its Twitter account had only 1,700 followers at launch before growing to over 169,000 following the game's success.

'Valheim': Vikings, Roadmaps & Buying a Horse During Early Access

Valheim represents a case study in the strategic application of Early Access, demonstrating how a lean, 13-person development team can achieve global commercial success by prioritizing core gameplay pillars over aggressive monetization.

  • Early Access is a double-edged sword that requires a highly polished initial release, as developers only get one chance to make a first impression and must accept that the game effectively becomes the players' property upon purchase.
  • Prioritizing accessibility for a debut title—such as maintaining a small download size (approximately 1GB at launch) and aggressive, player-friendly pricing—can be more effective for building word-of-mouth than higher price points.
  • Maintaining feature parity across platforms, such as PC and Xbox, creates significant development overhead and requires careful synchronization of branches to support cross-platform multiplayer.

  • BattleBit Remastered sold approximately 3.66 million copies on Steam, generating $49.3 million in gross revenue following its June 2023 release.
