The video game industry in France maintains a robust position as a primary cultural and social pillar, with 38.3 million active players representing 52 percent of the national population. Gaming is increasingly recognized as a creative and innovative sector that fosters significant social connectivity, as evidenced by the 59 percent of players who participate in multiplayer experiences. Beyond digital engagement, French gamers demonstrate higher levels of participation in external cultural and sporting activities than the general population, challenging traditional perceptions of sedentary play.
Mobile devices and smartphones serve as the dominant hardware across most demographics, cementing casual and mobile titles as the most popular genres. Despite the digital shift, a notable consumer preference for physical media persists, fueled by the desire for collectibility, resale value, and the ability to share games among peers. While awareness of the PEGI age-rating system is high at 68 percent, the adoption of parental control software remains relatively low at 41 percent, indicating a gap between awareness and active digital management.
Industry leadership, represented by the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL), continues to prioritize consumer safety and responsible gaming through educational initiatives like the PédaGoJeux collective. These efforts focus on managing screen time, privacy, and online interactions to ensure a secure environment for younger users. Furthermore, the industry is experiencing a positive shift in its professional perception, with a growing appeal as a viable career path, particularly among women aged 15 to 34. Guided by a board of directors from major global publishers, the sector remains committed to advocacy, diversity, and the promotion of gaming as a central element of modern digital life.
