This represents a 1.6% increase over the previous year and a 13.5% cumulative growth over two years.
The French video game market achieved a record-breaking performance in 2021, generating a total turnover of 5.6 billion euros. This represents a 1.6% increase over the previous year and a cumulative growth of 13.5% over a two-year period. The industry’s sustained expansion reflects a deep-seated trend in consumer behavior, with 73% of the French population now identifying as occasional gamers and 58% as regular players, marking a significant six-point increase in engagement compared to 2020.
The market’s growth was primarily driven by a surge in hardware sales, which reached 1.766 billion euros, a 22% increase over 2020. Console hardware specifically saw a 17% rise, despite supply chain constraints that limited the industry's ability to meet full consumer demand. PC gaming also reached a historic milestone, contributing 1.492 billion euros to the total market value. While console ecosystems accounted for 49% of total revenue, the PC segment represented 26%, and mobile gaming—which experienced a marginal 1% decline—accounted for the remaining 25%.
Software sales experienced a cyclical adjustment, totaling 1.996 billion euros, an 11% decrease from the exceptionally high figures recorded in 2020. This decline in volume, which saw 24 million complete games sold across console and PC platforms, is attributed to a combination of high baseline comparisons from the previous year and a series of launch delays. However, the industry remains optimistic for the subsequent period, as the strong hardware install base is expected to drive future software and accessory sales. Data for this analysis was compiled by the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs using industry panels including GSD, GameTrack, App Annie, and IDC.
