It is the third-best historical performance for the sector.
See it on page 1The French video game market demonstrated significant resilience in 2022, maintaining a stable position despite a challenging global economic climate characterized by inflation and supply chain disruptions. Generating a total revenue of 5.5 billion euros, the sector experienced only a marginal decline of 1.6 percent compared to the previous year, marking its third-best historical performance. This stability is underpinned by a robust consumer base, with seven out of ten French citizens engaging with video games at least occasionally.
The market’s performance was driven by complementary dynamics across three primary ecosystems. The PC gaming sector reached a historic milestone, generating 1.54 billion euros and achieving a 5.8 percent growth, largely fueled by a 40 percent surge in software sales. Conversely, the console ecosystem, which accounts for 46 percent of the total market value at 2.56 billion euros, faced a 6.6 percent decline. This downturn was primarily attributed to hardware supply shortages that hindered the industry's ability to meet high consumer demand. The mobile gaming sector remained steady, contributing 1.41 billion euros to the total market.
Software sales emerged as a key growth engine, rising 6 percent to reach 2.1 billion euros. Within the console segment, physical media maintained its dominance, accounting for 55 percent of total software value compared to 45 percent for digital formats. These findings, derived from industry panels including GSD, GameTrack, data.ai, and IDC, suggest that the underlying demand for gaming remains strong. Industry leadership views these results as evidence of a durable market structure, positioning the sector for continued positive development in the coming years.
