The French video game market has reached a significant milestone, engaging 39.1 million players, or 72.1% of the national population, as of October 2023. With an average player age of 40, gaming has evolved into a mainstream, intergenerational activity that fosters social connection and community building. This widespread adoption is supported by a robust retail landscape where physical media remains highly valued for its collectability and resale potential, even as digital and mobile gaming dominate the technical landscape. Smartphones and consoles serve as the primary hardware, driving the popularity of casual and mobile genres across increasingly diverse demographics, including significant growth among female and senior players.
Beyond entertainment, the industry is gaining professional legitimacy, with one in three young adults expressing interest in gaming careers. This cultural shift is accompanied by a strong emphasis on safety and responsibility. While 94% of parents are aware of PEGI ratings and a majority engage in gaming with their children, there remains a gap in the active implementation of parental control tools, which are currently utilized by only 45% of parents. Educational initiatives like PédaGoJeux continue to bridge this divide, promoting informed and safe gaming habits within the household.
Industry leadership, spearheaded by the Union of Video Game Publishers, is actively shaping the sector’s future through advocacy, consumer protection, and environmental stewardship. By standardizing eco-friendly practices through carbon footprint assessments and the development of a dedicated green guide, the industry is addressing its environmental impact while simultaneously organizing major cultural events like Paris Games Week. These efforts ensure that the French gaming sector remains a sustainable, professional, and socially integrated pillar of the national economy.
