37 million people, or 7 out of 10 individuals, play video games at least occasionally. 53% of French players engage with games on a weekly basis.
The 2022 study on French gaming habits, conducted by Médiamétrie for the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL), establishes video games as a pervasive, intergenerational, and social leisure activity in France. Based on an online survey of 4,001 internet users aged 10 and older conducted between August and September 2022, the findings demonstrate that gaming has transcended its traditional association with youth to become a mainstream digital pastime.
Data indicates that 7 out of 10 French people, totaling over 37 million individuals, play video games at least occasionally, with 53% playing on a weekly basis. The demographic profile is broad, featuring an average player age of 39, with 68% of adults and 44% of those over 60 participating. Gaming is characterized by high engagement, as players utilize an average of 2.2 platforms and explore three distinct genres. Furthermore, the medium is increasingly viewed as a social catalyst; 69% of players cite conviviality as a primary motivation, and 60% engage in multiplayer experiences.
The study also highlights the integration of gaming into family life, with 64% of parents playing with their children. This domestic usage is marked by high levels of responsibility, as 95% of the population is aware of parental control tools, and a significant majority of families rely on the PEGI classification system to guide their purchasing decisions. Beyond the home, the industry serves as a source of professional inspiration, particularly for the 18-24 age demographic, 43% of whom have considered a career in the sector. Ultimately, the findings position video games as a central pillar of French digital culture, fostering both individual escapism and collective social connection.
