As of November 2022, 37.4 million people, or 53 percent of the French population, are active video game players.
Video games have become a cornerstone of French culture, engaging 37.4 million individuals, or 53 percent of the total population, as of late 2022. This widespread adoption reflects a shift in public perception, as the medium is increasingly recognized as a positive, artistic, and innovative field. Beyond mere entertainment, gaming serves as a significant social catalyst, with 60 percent of players participating in multiplayer experiences and 72 percent of the public viewing the hobby as a family-friendly activity. This cultural integration is further evidenced by the 16 percent of internet users who express a professional interest in pursuing careers within the industry.
Demographic engagement remains diverse, though hardware preferences vary significantly across age groups and genders. Smartphones have emerged as the primary gaming device for Gen Z, women, and senior players, underscoring the accessibility of mobile platforms. As gaming becomes a staple of domestic life, parental involvement remains high; 64 percent of parents actively play alongside their children. To manage this environment, families rely heavily on established frameworks such as the PEGI rating system and integrated console parental controls to regulate content, playtime, and online interactions.
The Union of Video Game Publishers (SELL) serves as the central authority for the French gaming sector, prioritizing consumer protection and the promotion of responsible gaming. Through collaborative initiatives like the PédaGoJeux collective, the organization provides essential resources for parents to navigate digital safety and screen time management. By balancing the promotion of major industry events like Paris Games Week with advocacy for digital sobriety, diversity, and inclusion, the industry continues to mature, ensuring that its rapid growth remains aligned with societal standards and the evolving needs of the French gaming community.
