This represents a significant growth of nearly 10% compared to the previous year. France is one of the most dynamic markets in Europe.
The French video game market achieved a historic milestone in 2023, reaching a total revenue of 6.1 billion euros. This represents a significant growth of nearly 10% compared to the previous year, cementing France’s position as one of the most dynamic markets in Europe. These results, compiled by the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL) using data from GSD, GameTrack, data.ai, and IDC, reflect a robust recovery following the atypical market cycles induced by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The console ecosystem served as the primary growth engine, expanding by 24.1% to exceed 3 billion euros and accounting for 52% of the total market value. This surge was largely driven by improved hardware availability compared to 2022 and strong software sales. The hardware segment, including accessories, saw a 17% increase to 2.332 billion euros, fueled by consumer demand for high-tech equipment. Meanwhile, the mobile gaming sector grew to 1.483 billion euros, representing 24% of the market, while the PC gaming sector accounted for another 24% with 1.432 billion euros in revenue.
Software performance remained strong across all platforms, with total software revenue reaching a record 3.7 billion euros. This growth was bolstered by a significant shift toward digital sales, which saw substantial increases on both PC and console platforms. Despite these record-breaking financial figures, the industry maintains a cautious outlook for 2024, anticipating a potential market normalization. Furthermore, the strong financial performance of the sector contrasts with ongoing challenges regarding employment stability within production and publishing companies, highlighting a complex landscape for the industry despite its overall economic resilience.
