Hearthstone cover

Hearthstone is a free-to-play digital collectible card game set in the Warcraft universe. Originally subtitled Heroes of Warcraft, the game features turn-based one-on-one matches where players build 30-card decks and select heroes from eleven classes, each with unique abilities. Players spend mana crystals each turn to summon minions, cast spells, and use weapons with the goal of reducing their opponent's health to zero. The game includes multiple modes such as ranked competitive play, Arena drafting, Battlegrounds (an auto battler for eight players), and rotating Tavern Brawl challenges. New card sets are released as expansions every four months, with a Standard format that rotates older cards out of competitive play.

  • Apple’s App Store revenue is facing a downturn, with Sensor Tower reporting a 6% decline in US consumer spending for Q2 and App Figures estimating an 18% contraction in US commission revenue, largely driven by legal rulings forcing the allowance of external payment methods.
  • Korean MMO giant NC (formerly NCsoft) has invested $300 million in mobile studio acquisitions and aims to grow its mobile casual division into a $5 billion business by 2030, targeting established studios with live titles generating $50–$100 million annually.
  • Supercell will finalize its acquisition of Metacore by the end of September, officially bringing the 'Merge Mansion' title into its portfolio following significant restructuring and layoffs at Metacore.

Why Big Game Companies Don't Make Small Games

Large game publishers frequently face criticism for prioritizing massive, high-budget projects over smaller, experimental titles.

  • Publicly traded publishers prioritize established franchises like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft because they offer the predictable, scalable revenue required to satisfy corporate mandates for high ROI.
  • Large companies view smaller, experimental projects as inefficient uses of resources because they lack the potential to become billion-dollar franchises that justify massive marketing and technical infrastructure investments.
  • The industry’s shift toward 'engagement-first' design metrics, such as daily active users, penalizes shorter or experimental games that cannot sustain the long-term retention levels of live-service models.
