Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced the return of the digital card game Hearthstone to the mainland Chinese market, effective September 25, 2024. This development follows the restoration of a partnership between Microsoft-owned Activision Blizzard and the Chinese game publisher NetEase, which had previously dissolved in January 2023. The relaunch marks the end of a twenty-month hiatus for the title in the region, during which time Chinese players were excluded from global competitive events, including the 2023 Hearthstone World Championship.
The return of the game is accompanied by a renewed commitment to the local esports ecosystem. The 2024 Hearthstone Masters Tour World Championship will feature a 16-player field, with four slots reserved for competitors from China. Furthermore, the Thunder Fire Group—a game studio under the NetEase umbrella—will serve as the local distributor and has committed to sponsoring $138,000 USD of the tournament’s $500,000 total prize pool. This represents a notable increase in investment compared to the 2023 championship, which offered a $350,000 prize pool and featured only eight participants.
While Hearthstone is the second Blizzard title to return to China following World of Warcraft, the status of other major franchises, specifically StarCraft II and Overwatch 2, remains pending. This strategic move signals a significant effort by both companies to reintegrate Chinese players into the global competitive landscape and revitalize the Blizzard brand within one of the world's largest gaming markets.
