Approximately 10 staff members from the Hearthstone team were laid off. This follows a trend of workforce reductions, including 50 employees from the esports division earlier in 2023.
Blizzard Entertainment recently implemented organizational changes resulting in the layoff of approximately 10 staff members from the Hearthstone team. These personnel reductions follow a broader trend of workforce adjustments within the company, including a significant reduction of 50 employees from its esports division earlier in 2023. While the company characterizes these moves as routine organizational restructuring, the layoffs coincide with a period of sustained revenue decline for the title.
Market data from AppMagic indicates that Hearthstone’s mobile revenue has experienced a sharp downturn, falling 57% between January and September 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This decline is largely attributed to the termination of a 14-year licensing partnership with NetEase, which resulted in the removal of Blizzard’s titles from the Chinese market in January 2023. Historically, China served as the game’s primary market, accounting for 28% of its total lifetime mobile revenue.
The competitive landscape for collectible card games has also intensified, with Hearthstone currently ranking fifth in mobile revenue for 2023, trailing competitors such as Marvel Snap, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, and Magic: The Gathering Arena. While the game remains a notable player in the genre, its annual mobile revenue has steadily decreased from $71.3 million in 2021 to $61.5 million in 2022. The absence of a new publishing partner in China continues to present a significant challenge to the game’s long-term financial performance and market reach.
