Approximately 28% of the total Korean game user base plays indie games.
The 2024 analysis of Korea’s indie game market provides a comprehensive overview of user behavior, preferences, and industry challenges within the domestic gaming landscape. Based on a national survey of 8,036 PC, mobile, and console players, the findings reveal that 28% of the total gaming population engages with indie titles. Participation is highest among male users and those aged 20 to 29, who represent the most active demographic segment. Players are primarily drawn to the sector by the appeal of light, casual gameplay, original themes, and intuitive controls, which facilitate short, accessible play sessions.
Discovery of indie content is driven largely by digital media, with 41% of users citing gameplay and review videos as their primary source of information, followed by store rankings and personal recommendations. However, demographic nuances exist; younger users rely heavily on store rankings and video content, while older cohorts and female players are more influenced by social recommendations and advertisements. These patterns underscore the importance of targeted marketing strategies to reach diverse segments of the Korean gaming population.
Despite the sector's growth, significant barriers to long-term engagement persist. Users frequently express dissatisfaction regarding the uncertainty of sequel releases, slow update cycles, and limited promotional visibility. These operational hurdles suggest a need for a more robust development ecosystem. To foster industry sustainability, recommendations include providing financial and technical support for ongoing development, enhancing video-based marketing capabilities to improve discoverability, and creating tailored content to better serve underrepresented demographics, such as female and older players. Addressing these systemic issues is essential for expanding the reach and stability of the indie game market in Korea.
