This represents a 1.6% increase over the previous year and a 13.5% growth over the past two years.
The French video game market demonstrated sustained resilience and expansion throughout 2021, achieving a record turnover of 5.6 billion euros. This figure represents a 1.6 percent increase over the previous year and a notable 13.5 percent growth over the preceding two-year period. The primary catalyst for this financial performance was a 22 percent surge in hardware sales, which effectively compensated for minor contractions in other industry segments. Within this landscape, the PC gaming ecosystem emerged as a significant driver, with hardware sales climbing 26 percent to reach 971 million euros.
Market dominance remains concentrated among major global publishers, with titles such as FIFA 22 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons leading in both total value and unit volume. The industry’s reach is extensive, encompassing 38.29 million players, or 73 percent of the French population. Engagement levels are high, as 76 percent of these individuals participate in gaming on a daily or near-daily basis. The proliferation of consoles and smartphones has further solidified the medium’s integration into the domestic sphere, supported by a growing trend of parental involvement.
Industry stakeholders prioritize consumer safety and responsible engagement, evidenced by the widespread adoption of the PEGI rating system and the success of educational initiatives like PédaGoJeux. Approximately 92 percent of parents report awareness of parental control systems, and 70 percent actively participate in selecting games for their children. Governance of these industry standards and broader market interests is managed by the Syndicat des Éditeurs de Loisirs, which coordinates efforts among major publishers including Ubisoft, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony to ensure continued growth and ethical development within the French gaming sector.
