The French video game market reached a historic milestone in 2017, generating 4.3 billion euros in total turnover and achieving a record growth rate of 18 percent. This expansion was primarily fueled by the console ecosystem, which accounted for 56 percent of the total market value. The industry benefited from a combination of new hardware launches and robust software sales, with console software turnover rising by 20 percent. This growth was particularly bolstered by a 46 percent surge in digital sales, while the PC gaming sector maintained stability, with 95 percent of its software revenue derived from digital distribution channels. Major franchises such as FIFA 18, Call of Duty: WWII, and The Sims 4 served as the primary catalysts for these financial gains.
Beyond financial performance, the industry maintains a deep integration into French culture, with 53 percent of the population engaging in gaming as a regular leisure activity. The market is dominated by major publishers including Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Activision Blizzard, with home consoles and smartphones serving as the most prevalent platforms. This widespread adoption is supported by a strong commitment to social responsibility and consumer protection. Industry stakeholders prioritize the mandatory PEGI age-rating system and provide educational resources like PédaGoJeux to assist families in navigating gaming habits.
The industry’s focus on social responsibility is reflected in high levels of parental involvement, as 84 percent of French parents monitor their children’s gaming activities, and 71 percent actively participate in gaming alongside them. Furthermore, trade associations actively foster industry growth and inclusivity through large-scale public events like Paris Games Week and initiatives designed to highlight professional opportunities for women. These efforts underscore a strategic commitment to sustaining long-term market health and promoting a diverse, informed gaming environment across all age groups.
