The report provides a comprehensive analysis of gaming habits and lifestyle trends.
The 2015 CESA Consumer Survey Report provides a comprehensive analysis of gaming habits and lifestyle trends among the Japanese population. Serving as the foundational data for the broader CESA Game White Paper, the report examines the engagement levels of individuals aged 3 to 79 across Japan. The methodology involved a survey of 2,914 valid samples, which were then extrapolated to estimate national figures regarding hardware ownership and usage patterns.
Key findings highlight a robust gaming landscape, with an estimated 48.09 million individuals identified as active, continuous players across all platforms. When segmented by hardware, smartphone and tablet gaming emerged as the most popular category, accounting for 33.31 million continuous players. In the context of traditional console gaming, the report estimates 52.83 million console owners, 31.38 million active users, and 15.41 million continuous players.
Regarding specific hardware preferences, the Nintendo DS maintained the highest ownership rate at 30.8%, followed by the Wii at 25.7%. In terms of actual usage, the Wii led with a 13.2% play rate, closely followed by the Nintendo 3DS at 12.7%. These statistics underscore a shifting market where mobile devices have achieved significant penetration, even as traditional home consoles retain a substantial user base. This publication marks the conclusion of a long-standing collaborative research effort with the Korea Creative Content Agency, as the industry has reached a sufficient level of mutual understanding regarding market environments.
