The Game Creator Skill Verification Project aims to establish a standardized, industry-wide framework for talent development within Japan’s gaming sector. By creating a comprehensive skill map, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic curricula and the practical requirements of the professional game development industry. This effort is positioned as a critical component of Japan’s broader growth strategy, which identifies the content industry as a core economic pillar with a target of 20 trillion yen in overseas revenue by 2033.
The project utilizes a collaborative methodology involving a steering committee of academic and industry experts, alongside six specialized working groups. These groups are tasked with categorizing essential game development competencies into six distinct domains: engineering, production, visual arts, game design, sound, and essential skills. By moving beyond traditional job titles to focus on functional skill sets, the project provides a structured taxonomy that can be applied to curriculum design, student career guidance, corporate recruitment standards, and internal employee training programs.
Implementation is scheduled in phases, with the initial skill mapping and systemization occurring throughout the 2026 fiscal year. Subsequent stages in 2027 will focus on public dissemination, integration with educational institutions, and real-world validation of the framework. Long-term objectives include the continuous updating of the skill map to reflect technological shifts and the potential development of formal certification programs. This initiative serves as a foundational effort to ensure a sustainable supply of high-quality, globally competitive talent, thereby securing the long-term growth of the Japanese game industry.
