See it on page 9The Asian gaming landscape is experiencing a significant shift driven by the increasing influence of female players, who now represent 35% of the region’s 1.42 billion gamers. This demographic is a primary catalyst for industry growth, exhibiting a year-over-year gamer population increase of 7.6%, which outpaces the total market growth rate of 5.0%. The analysis underscores that female gamers are a vital, high-value segment characterized by strong engagement with in-game monetization and specific genre preferences.
The research covers a broad geographic scope, encompassing China and the Asia-10 markets, including Japan, Korea, India, and several Southeast Asian nations. Data collection relied on a robust methodology involving surveys of 2,400 gamers in China and 4,149 gamers across the Asia-10 region, supplemented by qualitative analysis of third-party sources. Respondents were defined as individuals who played games on mobile, PC, or console devices within the 30 days preceding the 2021 data collection period.
Key findings reveal that mobile gaming is the dominant platform for female players across these markets. When selecting new titles, these gamers prioritize peer recommendations, visual aesthetics, and core gameplay mechanics, with a marked preference for role-playing, racing, and strategy genres. Furthermore, the segment demonstrates high commercial potential, as 84% of female gamers are willing to make in-game purchases, particularly favoring items and gacha mechanics. In 2021, this spending behavior translated into significant revenue contributions, with billions of dollars generated across both PC and mobile platforms. Ultimately, the findings advocate for greater gender inclusivity in game development, positioning the female demographic as an essential pillar for the future expansion and sustainability of the Asian games market.
