There were 15.1 million home consoles and 17.1 million handheld consoles in use across the French market.
The video game industry in France and Europe is currently undergoing a significant transition driven by the launch of eighth-generation consoles. As of May 2014, the market is characterized by strong growth in home console hardware, which serves as a catalyst for subsequent increases in software and accessory sales. This cyclical pattern of hardware adoption followed by software and accessory demand remains the primary engine for industry turnover.
Data indicates that the eighth-generation home console launch—including the Wii U, Xbox One, and PS4—outperformed the seventh generation by 14% in value during the first two quarters of 2014. In France, the console ecosystem is deeply integrated into household entertainment, with 15.1 million home consoles and 17.1 million handheld consoles in use by the end of 2013. Across Europe, hardware turnover saw a substantial increase of 67.4% in the first half of 2014, contributing to a 20.4% rise in overall industry turnover.
Consumer behavior analysis reveals that video game purchases are increasingly intentional, with a higher rate of planned buying compared to other cultural goods. While physical retail remains significant, online channels are growing, particularly among male demographics. The industry is also prioritizing consumer protection and education through the widespread adoption of the PEGI age-rating system and the PedaGoJeux initiative, which provides guidance to parents.
The French industry itself is composed of a diverse network of design studios, publishers, and distributors, with a high concentration of creative and marketing companies located in the Île-de-France region. With approximately 29 million gamers in France alone, the sector continues to evolve as a central pillar of the modern entertainment economy, supported by ongoing professional trade events and industry-wide efforts to combat piracy and promote responsible gaming.
