The 2014 CESA General Consumer Survey Report provides a comprehensive analysis of gaming habits and lifestyle trends among the Japanese population. Conducted by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), the study serves as foundational data for the organization’s annual white paper. The research methodology involved a survey of 2,515 individuals aged 3 to 79 across Japan, with results extrapolated to represent the total population. To improve accuracy, the 2014 edition implemented a revised survey design and updated user classification metrics, precluding direct comparisons with data from previous years.
Key findings highlight a significant reach for the gaming industry, with an estimated 44.2 million individuals identified as active, continuous game players across all platforms. Within the domestic market, the report categorizes console gaming engagement into three tiers: 57.5 million individuals own a home console, 32.07 million are classified as active console users, and 14.62 million are identified as continuous console players.
The data reveals that mobile gaming has become the dominant segment, with 26.72 million continuous players utilizing smartphones or tablets. Furthermore, the report includes a cross-platform analysis, identifying a high degree of overlap where users of traditional home consoles, PCs, and arcade games frequently engage with mobile and tablet gaming. In addition to the Japanese findings, the report incorporates collaborative research conducted with the Korea Creative Content Agency, providing a broader perspective on regional gaming behaviors.
