RGDA – Romanian Game Developers Association
The Romanian video game landscape in 2022 comprises 7.8 million players aged 15 to 64, representing a balanced demographic split of 51% men and 49% women. The primary objective of this analysis is to map player behavior, platform preferences, and consumption habits within the domestic market. Findings indicate a clear gender-based divide in platform usage, with men favoring PC and console gaming, while women predominantly engage with mobile titles. Mobile remains the most popular platform overall, utilized by 70% of the gaming population.
Financial engagement is notable, as 62% of players report spending money on games or upgrades at least once a month. While digital acquisition is dominant—with 83% of players downloading games directly from publisher platforms and 75% of online shoppers utilizing Steam—a significant portion of the market still relies on free acquisition methods, including torrents and borrowing. Motivation for play is largely driven by relaxation, hobbies, and boredom, with Action-Adventure and Shooters emerging as the most popular genres.
The ecosystem extends beyond active play into content consumption, where 70% of players watch gaming-related media. YouTube serves as the primary platform for this content, followed by Twitch and Facebook. While international content creators command a larger audience share at 47%, a quarter of the market prefers domestic streamers. Furthermore, the industry shows a growing commitment to safety, as 66% of parents report utilizing parental control tools. These insights highlight a mature, diverse, and highly digital-first gaming culture in Romania that balances casual mobile engagement with dedicated PC and console experiences.
