This figure represents a stable performance, with only a marginal 1.2% decline from the previous year's record-breaking results.
The Italian video game market maintained significant resilience throughout 2022, generating a total turnover of €2.2 billion. Although this figure represents a marginal 1.2% decline from the record-breaking performance of the previous year, the industry demonstrated structural maturation. The player base stabilized at 14.2 million individuals, accounting for 32.2% of the national population. While hardware supply chain constraints and a post-pandemic shift in leisure habits contributed to a slight contraction in consumer reach, mobile gaming remains the dominant platform, capturing 69.7% of the market.
Domestic production emerged as a primary engine of growth, with revenues surging by 30% to reach an estimated €130 to €150 million. This expansion is underpinned by a 50% increase in sector employment, characterized by a young, highly professionalized workforce increasingly oriented toward international markets, particularly North America. This upward trajectory in domestic output highlights a strategic pivot toward global competitiveness and sustainable industrial development within the Italian creative economy.
Industry stakeholders continue to prioritize consumer safety and social responsibility, with 64.4% of all titles sold carrying PEGI ratings for younger audiences. The widespread implementation of parental control tools reflects a commitment to secure gaming environments. Supported by the Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association, the sector is actively fostering growth through institutional advocacy, startup acceleration, and the integration of digital entertainment into educational and inclusive frameworks. These efforts solidify the industry's role as a vital component of Italy’s broader technological and cultural landscape.
