IIDEA – Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association
The sector demonstrates robust resilience and expansion. It functions as both a catalyst for economic growth and a significant driver of social well-being.
The Italian video game industry has emerged as a vital strategic asset, functioning as both a catalyst for economic growth and a significant driver of social well-being. With a market turnover reaching approximately 2.2 billion euros in 2020, the sector demonstrates robust resilience and expansion, supported by a growing ecosystem of 160 domestic companies and a dedicated esports fan base of 1.6 million people. Beyond its commercial performance, the industry is increasingly recognized for its capacity to foster cognitive development, facilitate social inclusion, and provide therapeutic benefits, particularly as a psychological buffer during periods of isolation.
Despite this momentum, Italy currently trails international competitors in industrial production and public support. The sector is positioned as a key pillar of the modern "Made in Italy" brand, capable of merging technological innovation with creative output to promote tourism and professional training. However, realizing this potential requires a shift in public perception to move beyond outdated generational stigmas and toward a formal recognition of gaming as a high-value, innovative industry.
To bridge the gap with nations like France and the United Kingdom, the implementation of targeted fiscal policies and public investment programs is essential. Projections indicate that strategic state support could generate significant revenue growth and create over 1,000 new high-quality jobs by 2026. By fostering an environment that encourages industrial development and international competitiveness, Italy can leverage the gaming sector to drive long-term economic resilience and solidify its role as a global contributor to digital culture and technological advancement.
