IIDEA – Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association
This represents a 21.9% increase, driven by digital sales and a player base of 16.7 million people. The domestic market provides a vital foundation for industry expansion.
The Italian video game industry has entered a phase of significant maturation, characterized by a robust ecosystem of approximately 160 companies and over 1,600 professionals. As of 2021, the sector demonstrates high levels of stability, with nearly three-quarters of studios operating for more than four years. This growth is underpinned by a strong export-oriented strategy, as 94% of business-to-consumer revenue is generated outside of Italy. The industry is increasingly shifting toward premium, multi-project development, with studios successfully scaling operations to compete in global AA and AAA markets while leveraging technical expertise in areas such as racing simulators and narrative-driven titles.
The domestic market remains a vital foundation for this expansion, reaching €2.179 billion in revenue in 2020, a 21.9% increase fueled by digital sales and a diverse player base of 16.7 million people. Despite pandemic-related challenges, 87% of developers maintain an optimistic outlook, bolstered by Italy’s rising profile as a hub for interactive entertainment. Regional clusters in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, and Lazio continue to drive this momentum, supported by academic partnerships and strategic collaborations that address the critical need for specialized talent.
To sustain this trajectory, industry stakeholders are prioritizing the professionalization of the sector through increased investment and international partnerships. Trade associations like IIDEA are actively advocating for structural support, including long-term public funding and competitive tax credits, to solidify the "Made in Italy" brand globally. By fostering an environment that encourages proprietary intellectual property and technological innovation, the Italian game development sector is well-positioned to leverage its creative reputation and strategic European location to secure a more prominent role in the international video game market.
