The kit focuses on the historical figure Gajah Mada within the K13 curriculum. It aims to foster critical thinking and national awareness among students.
Key Solution. An AR learning kit is used to modernize Indonesian fourth-grade history education, focusing on Gajah Mada.
This project addresses the declining engagement of Indonesian elementary students with history education, a subject traditionally taught through monotonous, text-heavy curricula. By leveraging augmented reality (AR) technology, the initiative seeks to transform static history lessons into dynamic, interactive experiences. The primary objective is to provide educators with an alternative tool that aligns with the Indonesian K13 curriculum, specifically focusing on the historical figure Gajah Mada, while fostering critical thinking and national awareness among fourth-grade students.
The methodology employs a qualitative approach, incorporating expert interviews with game developers and educators to inform the design of a comprehensive learning kit. This kit integrates a physical textbook, interactive cards, and an AR application. Design elements are specifically tailored to child psychology, utilizing bright, high-contrast colors and distinct geometric shape language to define character traits and social status within the Majapahit Empire. The system utilizes a quest-based structure, featuring both historical "main quests" and casual "random quests" to encourage active participation and knowledge retention.
The development process highlights the potential of AR to bridge the gap between physical and virtual learning environments. While technical challenges—such as mastering C# scripting and optimizing AR scanning speeds—were significant, the project demonstrates that integrating technology into traditional classroom materials can effectively modernize historical studies. The findings suggest that this model is scalable and could be adapted for other historical figures, provided that future iterations incorporate more robust animations and expanded card variations to maintain student interest and increase the complexity of the learning experience.
