Among surveyed Steam users, 57.6% engage with a mix of PC, console, and mobile gaming, while 42.4% play exclusively on PC.
Key finding. A majority of dedicated Steam users engage in multi-platform gaming.
The analysis challenges the perception of the monolithic PC gamer by examining the multi-platform habits of core Steam users. By surveying over 16,000 international Steam players, the research demonstrates that a significant portion of the PC-first audience engages with console and mobile gaming platforms, debunking the idea that these players are restricted to a single ecosystem.
Key findings indicate that while 42.4% of respondents play exclusively on PC, the remaining majority participate in a blend of platforms. Specifically, 22% of PC players also engage with mobile gaming, 11.5% utilize consoles, and 15.6% maintain active play sessions across PC, console, and mobile devices. Among those who play on consoles, the Nintendo Switch is the most popular secondary device at 7.5%, followed by PlayStation at 6.4% and Xbox at 3.2%. Furthermore, the data reveals a notable overlap between PC and handheld gaming, with 13.4% of the sample using a Steam Deck and 16.4% using a Nintendo Switch, including a 5.5% segment that utilizes both alongside their primary PC setup.
The methodology relies on a self-reported Steam Fan Snapshot, which captures data from a highly engaged, online-savvy, and globally distributed subset of the gaming population. While these findings may not represent the broader, more casual gaming market, they provide a critical mental model for developers and industry stakeholders targeting core PC audiences. The analysis concludes that cross-platform engagement is a standard behavior among dedicated players, suggesting that platform-exclusive strategies should account for the reality of multi-device usage.
