This significant increase in unit sales was driven by an aggressive discounting strategy and a strong schedule of new releases.
See it on page 3The 2023 Steam Black Friday period marked a significant shift in the PC gaming landscape, characterized by record-breaking user engagement despite broader industry stagnation. While the global games market has faced a post-lockdown decline, Steam has bucked this trend, reaching a peak of 20.3 million concurrent in-game players in November 2023. This growth is attributed to the continued strength of the indie developer ecosystem, the migration of players from consoles to PC, and an increasing commitment from major publishers to the platform.
Sales volume reached a five-year high during this period, with 77 million units sold in November 2023, representing a 14% increase over the previous year. This surge in unit sales was primarily driven by an exceptionally strong release schedule and aggressive discounting strategies. Publishers, facing intense competition for consumer attention and a tightening economic climate, utilized steeper price cuts to maintain market share. Notably, many major titles were discounted by 40% or more within their first year of release, reflecting a strategic pivot toward volume-based sales to capture price-sensitive consumers.
Despite the rise in unit volume, total revenue for full games on Steam saw a slight year-over-year decline of 1.5%, falling to $1.076 billion. This discrepancy highlights a downward trend in average game prices, which dropped to $13.90 in 2023. The data suggests that the industry is entering a period of heightened price sensitivity, where publishers are forced to accept lower margins to remain competitive. As subscription services and a crowded release calendar continue to pressure the market, this trend toward discounting is expected to persist, signaling a long-term shift in how publishers monetize their titles during peak promotional windows.
