Total revenue for the month was $4.5 billion, a decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.
The American gaming market experienced a notable contraction in July 2026, with total revenue falling to $4.5 billion, a 10% decline compared to the same period in the previous year. This downturn affected all primary sectors, including hardware, software, and accessories, reflecting a broader trend of reduced consumer spending across the industry.
Hardware sales faced the most significant impact, plummeting 29% to $282 million, representing the sector's weakest July performance since 2020. This decline is attributed to a cooling of demand for the Nintendo Switch 2 following its initial launch hype, alongside rising console prices driven by volatility in the memory market. Unit sales for major platforms saw widespread decreases, with the Nintendo Switch 2 falling by 51%, Xbox Series by 18%, and PlayStation 5 by 6%.
The software segment also struggled, with total video game sales dropping 9% to $4.07 billion. While this decline was primarily driven by setbacks in the mobile gaming market, console and PC software sales also underperformed. Despite the overall market slump, legacy titles performed well, with the port of Call of Duty: Black Ops II emerging as the highest-grossing paid game of the month. Gaming accessories rounded out the negative performance, recording a 6% decrease in sales to $187 million. These findings, based on data from Circana, highlight a challenging mid-summer period for the U.S. gaming industry characterized by both macroeconomic pressures and a lack of sustained hardware momentum.
