Microsoft’s fiscal year 2026 financial results reveal a challenging period for its gaming division, characterized by a decline in revenue despite strong performance from the corporation as a whole. While Microsoft reported a total annual revenue of $331.8 billion—an 18% increase—and a 31% rise in net profit, the Xbox division experienced a 7% drop in annual revenue, totaling $21.79 billion. This downturn follows a record-breaking fiscal year 2025, making year-over-year comparisons particularly difficult.
The decline was driven primarily by a 29% collapse in revenue from console sales and hardware, alongside a 5% decrease in gaming content and services. The latter was attributed to weaker performance from internal game studios, though growth within the Game Pass subscription service helped mitigate further losses. Fourth-quarter results for 2026 showed a continued downward trend, with total Xbox revenue falling 10% and hardware sales declining by 13% during the April-to-June period.
In response to these results, leadership remains optimistic about a turnaround in fiscal year 2027. The company is currently undergoing a significant restructuring process, which has already involved 1,600 layoffs and is slated to continue through the summer of 2027. Management views these operational changes, combined with a focus on leveraging the company's intellectual property and studio talent, as essential steps to reset the business model and return the gaming division to long-term growth.
