Playtika is currently exploring the sale of its studio, SuperPlay, to Tencent, with an estimated valuation between $1 billion and $1.5 billion. This potential divestment stems from the studio’s rapid commercial success, which has created a financial strain on Playtika. Under the terms of the 2024 acquisition, Playtika committed to $700 million in upfront payments and an additional $1.25 billion in performance-based bonuses. Because SuperPlay has exceeded its growth benchmarks, the associated payout obligations have become difficult for Playtika to manage amid its own internal debt and financial challenges.
In a separate development within the gaming technology sector, W4 Games has secured $18 million in a funding round led by Tencent to support the development of the Godot engine. This investment includes a multi-year strategic partnership aimed at scaling the engine’s presence in Asian markets through localization and increased adoption among local studios. The capital is earmarked for expanding W4 Games' international team and accelerating the creation of corporate-grade solutions for the engine.
The industry data highlights a significant upward trend in the adoption of the Godot engine. According to Gamalytic, the number of Godot-based titles generating over $1 million in annual revenue has grown from only two games three years ago to 50 currently. Furthermore, the volume of Godot games released on Steam experienced consistent 50% year-over-year growth throughout 2024 and 2025. These developments reflect a broader shift in the market as major industry players like Tencent increasingly invest in both established studios and foundational game development infrastructure.
