Total spending on games, hardware, and accessories fell 21% year-over-year, reaching $4.49 billion.
The United States gaming market experienced a significant contraction in June 2026, marking the first year-over-year decline in twelve months. Total consumer spending across video games, hardware, and accessories reached $4.49 billion, representing a 21% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. This downturn is largely attributed to a difficult year-over-year comparison, as June 2025 benefited from the high-volume launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, a factor that has since normalized within the market.
Segmented data reveals that video game software spending totaled $3.88 billion, a 12% decline from the previous year. Hardware sales faced the most severe impact, plummeting 62% to $383 million. Within the hardware category, Nintendo Switch 2 sales dropped by 79% and PlayStation 5 sales fell by 19%, though Xbox Series consoles bucked the trend with a more than two-fold increase in sales. Additionally, spending on gaming accessories declined by 21% to $232 million.
The market performance was analyzed using data provided by Circana, which tracks consumer spending and sales trends across the US industry. Despite the overall decline, new releases maintained a presence in the top-grossing charts. EA Sports UFC 6 claimed the top spot for the month, followed by the indie title Meccha Chameleon and the new release Star Fox (2026). These findings underscore a period of market stabilization following the elevated hardware sales activity observed in the prior year.
