SELL – Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs
This represents a 15% year-over-year growth across console, PC, and mobile sectors.
The French video game market achieved a record turnover of €4.9 billion in 2018, marking a robust 15% growth across console, PC, and mobile ecosystems. This expansion was primarily fueled by a significant shift toward digital distribution, which now dominates the PC sector at 97% of software revenue. While physical software sales remained stable, console software experienced a substantial 67% increase, and mobile software revenue grew by 22%. Major titles such as FIFA 19 and Red Dead Redemption 2 anchored the physical market, with Nintendo and Electronic Arts emerging as the leading publishers by both volume and value.
Gaming has solidified its position as a mainstream leisure activity in France, with 51% of the population identifying as regular gamers. Smartphones and home consoles serve as the primary platforms for this demographic. Despite the widespread social acceptance of gaming—with nearly half of French adults viewing the medium as beneficial for child development—there remains a disconnect regarding safety tools. Although the industry promotes consumer protection through the PEGI rating system and integrated parental controls, 65% of adults do not actively consult these ratings when making purchasing decisions.
The Syndicat des Éditeurs de Logiciels de Loisirs (SELL) continues to act as the central authority for the industry, balancing market advocacy with corporate responsibility. Through initiatives like Paris Games Week and the management of educational platforms such as PédaGoJeux, the organization promotes innovation and inclusivity while navigating the evolving regulatory landscape. By fostering a culture of transparency and public engagement, the industry maintains a strong trajectory, positioning itself as a vital component of the French entertainment economy.
