This program offers financial incentives to organizations for building new rosters and promoting the Saudi-backed event.
100 Thieves President Jacob Toft-Andersen has clarified the organization’s involvement with the Esports World Cup, a major tournament series backed by the Saudi Arabian government. Despite being named as one of the 30 organizations selected for the event's Club Support Program, 100 Thieves will not field any competitive teams in the tournament this year. The organization’s participation is limited to accepting financial incentives provided by the program, which are intended to support the recruitment of new rosters and the promotion of the event.
The primary motivation for engaging with the program is the necessity of remaining competitive in the global esports landscape. Toft-Andersen emphasized that top-tier professional players prioritize participation in the most significant and lucrative tournaments. By aligning with the Esports World Cup, 100 Thieves aims to facilitate its future expansion into new titles, such as Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, and Fortnite, by ensuring it can offer players access to high-stakes competition. The organization views the tournament’s structure as a long-term, multi-disciplinary model similar to the Olympics.
The Esports World Cup is facilitated by the ESL FACEIT Group, a subsidiary of the Saudi-owned Savvy Games Group, and is funded by the nation’s Public Investment Fund. While the program offers financial rewards for both competitive participation and promotional activities, 100 Thieves is currently leveraging the partnership solely for its potential to aid in roster development and recruitment. The leadership at 100 Thieves has not publicly addressed the broader controversies associated with the event's funding sources, focusing instead on the strategic business necessity of maintaining access to premier tournament circuits.
