Log file analysis provides granular data on student behavior, opening the 'black box' of digital learning environments. This helps decode the relationship between in-game activity and academic outcomes.
Key Method. Granular log file analysis can effectively quantify student engagement and navigation strategies within serious games.
Serious games serve as a critical frontier for educational research, offering a unique environment where student engagement can be quantified through granular log file analysis. By examining the behavioral patterns of 118 master students navigating the VIBOA environmental policy game, it becomes clear that individual navigation strategies significantly influence learning efficiency. The primary objective of this analysis is to decode the relationship between in-game activity and academic outcomes, effectively opening the black box of digital learning environments to determine how specific player trajectories correlate with educational success.
A central finding of this research is the identification of switching behavior, defined as the frequency with which students transition between diverse game assets such as videos, resources, and locations. This trait accounts for 62 percent of the variability in learning efficiency, serving as a robust predictor of time-on-task and engagement levels. Contrary to concerns that students might bypass linear educational content, the data reveals that participants engage extensively with video resources. While high-frequency engagement across various game activities correlates strongly with overall progress, it is notable that these behavioral patterns do not reliably predict final assessment scores, nor do they appear to be influenced by a student’s prior knowledge.
These findings underscore the potential of learning analytics to provide objective insights into student behavior within serious games. Although the study is exploratory and limited by the absence of extensive background data and controlled experimental conditions, it establishes a foundational framework for future inquiry. To advance the field, subsequent research should prioritize the integration of log file analysis with controlled experimental designs and supplementary observational techniques. Such an approach will enhance the validity of these findings and provide a more comprehensive understanding of how digital gaming environments can be optimized to support diverse learning outcomes.
