Modern warfare requires understanding Multi-Domain Operations and Joint All-Domain Command and Control. Lecture-based instruction is less effective for fostering conceptual mastery in these areas.
Key Finding. Gamified learning is significantly more effective than lecture-based instruction for conceptual mastery of cyber capabilities and cross-domain integration.
Battlespace Next serves as a specialized serious game designed to enhance military readiness by teaching the complexities of Multi-Domain Operations and Joint All-Domain Command and Control. By utilizing a collectible card game framework, the initiative provides an accessible and cost-effective method for personnel to navigate contested environments and understand strategic synergy. The primary thesis posits that gamified learning environments significantly outperform traditional lecture-based instruction in fostering engagement and conceptual mastery, particularly regarding the integration of cyber capabilities and cross-domain operations.
The research encompasses six experiments involving 160 military participants, demonstrating that between 62% and 78% of players experience measurable improvements in key operational areas. Participants consistently reported higher engagement levels compared to conventional training, with 83% expressing a preference for the game over standard classroom methods. While the study acknowledges limitations such as experimental variability and the absence of control groups, the tool has received formal endorsement from senior Air Force leadership as a viable educational supplement for diverse experience levels.
To ensure long-term utility and scalability, the transition toward a digitized platform is identified as a critical next step. Future iterations aim to incorporate AI-driven adversaries and standardized environments to refine strategic analysis and improve data collection. By bridging the gap between introductory familiarization and advanced strategic application, this three-tier educational framework establishes a robust foundation for modernizing military training, ultimately proving that serious games are essential instruments for preparing forces for the complexities of modern, multi-domain warfare.
