Play’n Ride functions as a bike-based exergame designed to increase physical activity by integrating extrinsic fantasy elements with standard cycling equipment. By mapping pedaling cadence to the vertical flight altitude of an in-game character rather than traditional forward movement, the system shifts the focus from repetitive exercise to immersive gameplay. This design choice aims to lower the barrier to entry for non-athletes and casual gamers, effectively transforming routine physical exertion into an engaging, goal-oriented experience.
The system’s efficacy was evaluated through a field study involving 178 participants during the 2019 Tour de France. Data indicates high levels of usability and learnability, as evidenced by over 86% of users successfully initiating gameplay without formal instruction. Participants across diverse demographics, regardless of age, gender, or prior gaming experience, reported high engagement levels and a willingness to replay scenarios to improve performance. These findings suggest that extrinsic fantasy is a potent tool for fostering sustained interest in physical activity.
Beyond immediate user engagement, the platform offers a technical framework for creating customized fitness trails tailored to specific medical requirements or physical activity objectives. While the current results confirm the system’s potential to promote health-conscious behavior, future research must address existing demographic imbalances and evaluate the platform’s performance in broader, real-world contexts. Ultimately, the integration of intuitive sensor technology with compelling narrative environments provides a scalable model for modern exergaming, bridging the gap between sedentary entertainment and active lifestyle management.
