Tencent is actively developing multiple mobile titles inspired by the success of the indie hit Palworld, aiming to revitalize its gaming revenue following recent performance declines. The company has tasked its prominent internal development teams, Lightspeed Studios and TiMi Studio Group—the creators behind major titles such as PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty: Mobile—with creating free-to-play iterations of the survival-crafting genre. These projects are intended to incorporate core elements of the original game, including open-world exploration, pet collection, and stylized combat, while integrating Tencent’s proprietary monetization models.
The strategic shift reflects a broader corporate pivot toward developing original intellectual property rather than relying on licensed franchises. By incubating several competing projects simultaneously, the company intends to identify the most viable product for a full market launch. This approach is designed to mitigate the need for royalty payments to external IP owners and provide a sustainable path for growth after both domestic and international gaming segments experienced year-over-year revenue contractions in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2023.
To support these efforts, the company has begun reallocating internal talent from existing projects, such as High Energy Heroes, and is aggressively recruiting specialized staff, including Unreal Engine programmers and 3D artists. This initiative underscores the company's commitment to capitalizing on the proven market demand for the Palworld formula, which has reached over 25 million players globally since its early access launch in January 2024. The development efforts remain focused on leveraging the company's vast resources to secure a new, high-performing hit within its mobile portfolio.
