The mobile advertising landscape underwent significant shifts following the release of iOS 14.5 and the implementation of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework. Data collected by the Post-IDFA Alliance between April 26 and May 9, 2021, indicates that the industry experienced immediate volatility as marketers adjusted to restricted access to the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA). During this period, iOS 14.5 adoption rates remained relatively low, averaging 12.9%, while user consent for tracking varied significantly, with reported rates ranging from 16.8% to 36.5%.
The primary consequence of these privacy changes was a reallocation of marketing budgets. While iOS ad spend saw a modest decline of approximately 2.5% to 3.6%, Android ad spend experienced a notable surge, with increases reported between 8.3% and 21%. This shift suggests that advertisers began prioritizing the Android ecosystem to maintain user acquisition volumes. Furthermore, the industry observed a short-term downward pressure on cost-per-mille (CPM) rates, which fell by 2.4% to 8.7% as the market recalibrated to the new data-sharing environment.
To mitigate the challenges posed by these privacy restrictions, mobile marketers are increasingly diversifying their traffic sources. Beyond traditional platforms, industry experts identify Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs), Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) inventory, and offerwalls as viable alternatives for user acquisition. These channels offer distinct advantages, such as granular targeting and native ad integration, though they often require higher entry thresholds and longer optimization periods. The current market trend emphasizes the necessity of utilizing specialized agencies to navigate these complex, fragmented advertising ecosystems effectively.
