Robin Sloan's 2016 paper argues that contemporary nostalgia videogames can be understood as "playable game criticism," or "games-on-games," in which designers use the mechanics, aesthetics, and conventions of earlier titles to comment on those works and on players' memories of them. Drawing on literary and film theories of pastiche and parody, as well as Garda's continuum between restorative and reflective nostalgia and Mäyrä's core-and-shell model, Sloan proposes criteria for distinguishing these modes. The central thesis is that nostalgia games should not be dismissed as mere sentimentality, because they can function as critical explorations of gaming history.
The analysis centres on three case studies. Braid is read as an ironic critique of Super Mario Bros., where its time-reversal mechanic and puzzle-focused platforming reframe Mario as a cynical anti-hero and expose the idealised memory players hold of the original. Homesickened deliberately downgrades its visuals to a 1980s CGA-style palette and introduces awkward controls, challenging rose-tinted recollections of gaming's past. Velocity 2X, by contrast, works as a pastiche, borrowing heavily from Xenon, Metroid, and WipEout and inviting players to recognise these references and appreciate the designer's curated view of earlier game design. Together, these examples show a spectrum from critical imitation to affectionate homage.
The paper's scope is focused on digital games of the early-to-mid 2010s, drawing on indie and independent development and on references to earlier arcade, console, and computer titles. Its contribution lies in providing an analytical vocabulary for reading games as commentary on their own medium, situating interactive play as a form of critical discourse alongside literature, film, and art.
