Create free accounthello and welcome to pocket gaming business monetizer feature this is where we play the first five minutes or so of new free-to-play games just have a look at the uh the in-app economy and uh kind of just the user experience um so the game going to look at um it's actually been out for a couple of weeks now so it's um csr classic so this is the uh cs new uh not really the sequel csr racing as this i guess it count as an expansion pack um so it's a using classic cars rather than a non-classic cars i suppose so uk developer natural motion um let's see another battery yeah okay 10 so boss alien is the studio that develops it down in brighton in the uk so first thing we see like to send me
push notifications i really hate this i like push notifications when they're useful like i think most people would just switch these off now i mean i've not even played the game so i don't even know kind of what it's going to be sending me i'll say yes but i want to see what's going to send me i think this is a very impolite introduction to the game anyway here we go if you'd like to access my twitter account i mean this is just crazy no i mean why no i mean it's not gonna happen is it so it's pretty much the same as the csr we saw before we have this kind of a nice attractive young lady who's gonna help us through the tutorial part of the game so we're probably gonna end up driving a car pretty early on i'd imagine there's a car we could drive so tap the gas guest panel okay
now we're gonna do get ready shift up okay there we go so that's the basic gameplay of csr racing so it made it famous very very simple gameplay just about basically a rhythm action racing game they're very keen on twitter aren't they okay so it's me this is what i'm going to race i'm racing james bond but look at it until the light stays green okay not really good at doing this okay off we go it looks like i might win this one they've made the racetrack much shorter
than before turn this down a bit now i've got to restore cars as well every time you restore your body work your car gets better looking i was racing and oh oh oh i see okay so something's being downloaded here by wi-fi okay so that's quite a nice way of doing it you're not really kind of like getting an old beat up car and then winning will make it look nicer okay you can choose loved or unlocked that makes sense what is it downloading i think the day ones look nice isn't it it's just me okay so they're gonna give me some soft currency twenty five thousand dollars to buy my first car so this is this uh well-known reciprocity thing that we talk about quite a lot now so that's a
was a kind of well-known kind of retelling kind of thing where it's actually just human psychology if someone does you a favor you kind of um feel more obliged to them so this is this kind of idea you could they could just give you a car but in within the game this context is going to give us some money to make a choice um quite an important thing um so let's see if i get this if i go to loved ones okay so the loved cars here if i buy the the love version this is costing me 273 of these gold tokens this is the hard currency you've got you can see i've got none of those i've only got 25 000 of the silver dollars so if i want to buy one of those it's straight into the spending real money so let's go back to the analog one so get the choice of a mini or a an audi nice
an impala oh a thunderbird i'm just gonna have money oh no so even on this one even this one unloved is gonna cost me 218. and this one okay so i've only really got three choices and so two of those hard currency uh the mini the minis for the european market isn't it yeah one's for the americans okay let's try it okay i'm gonna get the color okay okay so i'm going to buy an a beating up audi coupe this is another thing that um it's
another monetization technique that's kind of good to get people within your kind of shop environment early on when they're not spending real money but just so they get an idea one how it works and two um that kind of spending soft money or hard money is is an important thing and the other things kind of csr does i mean i'm sure we'll see this later on tap to deliver to get the car but in some things as we get later in the game we'll have to potentially wait or pay so scarcity is another massive important thing in in retail scarcity creating scarcity so saying you really you've bought this new car in the game but you can't have it for half an hour because it's being delivered or something yeah it's kind of funny but unless you pay a little gold cards take a while to arrive i can live in for a small fee so it's still downloading oh okay that's interesting so actually that's handled relatively well it's been downloading in the background i might not have noticed that um and that's gonna touch it's told me what's gonna happen at least so that's kind of that's good so if i
let's get so i can get 30 of the hard currency units for free for something for facebook that's good to know as well i think that's kind of a every game should be doing that kind of thing but let's go next okay there's my car adding a decal and you more cash so this is kind of another pick of these kind of games um oh is that what's that i've got okay so this one every time i race it's going to give me a bonus of um the soft currency so it's kind of worth having oh i could probably different different color can i no oh god i've got a little okay that was going on there okay so let's do a race
so as in with so this is the regulation regulation race for rookies it's gonna give me 500 soft currency so let's quickly do a race and then go have a quick look at the shop not too bad to start so win again i'm always good to win at the start of the game some money incredible okay so let's have a quick look um at the currency so cash
cash and gold so cash that says again it's kind of interesting the order these things are provided to you in so this is um seven pounds which is seven pound three pounds so that's five dollars and the cheat isn't the cheapest one the cheapest one is two pounds which is gonna be oh that's i know i said that's three dollars um and then we go so we have six different transactions going up most expensive seventy pounds hundred dollars and they've nicely told us how much getting free or extra for those that's our currency discount ratio um so and also gold so again this is delivered in the same way the first one
you see is the kind of the one they want to sell you really that's the most popular because it's the cheapest one but that's the one they want they want you to buy well that's the one they want you to buy so hmm and we're getting 16 16 500 for that so that's everything you can see even though these are both so actually these i was getting confused these are two hard currencies so you're spending money to get both them but this is the softer of the two so you're getting a million of these silver dollar units for 100 100 and for the gold which is the the hard hard currency you're getting um sixteen thousand five hundred for a hundred dollars that's kinda like the model we're kind of seeing now we're kind of i think kind
of particularly kind of clash of clans you kind of were seeing roughly around this level of kind of 15 000 hard currency of the harder currency units you get for 100 that seems to be a ratio people like i think some of you end up giving because obviously you can you can make this could be any number um but it's just in kind of human psychology how we approach numbers around 15 000 seems to be the kind of right amount and obviously that means at the bottom here we're getting a few we're spending a few pounds we're getting a few hundred of those and that again that kind of seems about right or it seems to be like a appropriate kind of kind of currency transfer so that's um have a quick look at the car dealer so if you wanted to go straight away and get something cool um i'm sure our shelby will be help um so if you go to the lunch cars
so that'll be two for cobra that'll be 2000 of the 2000 gold so 2000 gold is gonna cost us so we're gonna be 20 just buying that if you want to buy that one go obviously we can we can grind it out if you want to but um you can kind of get an idea so it's a basically a doubling if you want to buy the smash that one oh well that's kind of makes sense okay also there we go that's uh csr racing classics kind of a i guess csr racing and kind of with the it's quite a nice touch i mean i think a lot of these things with these kind of in-game currencies is it's is it consistent within the kind of game universe kind of what you're doing and you kind of think if you're buying a beat up car that would be cheaper than one that's all nicely polished that it does make sense i mean even with the first csr racing had to laugh when you were buying import parts um
and you had to wait for them to go through customs i just wait or pay a bit more um hard currency but again that kind of was consistent within the at least within the kind of um within the game structure and i think that's one of the most important things for free to play games is you have you could you can be funny with it i suppose but have some sort of have some sort of kind of coherence and and consistency um within what you're asking people to uh to do in terms of playing and uh and paying you
CSR Classics, developed by Boss Alien and published by NaturalMotion, functions as an expansion to the original CSR Racing, utilizing the same rhythm-based drag racing mechanics while shifting the focus to classic vehicle restoration. The game employs a dual-currency model consisting of soft currency (cash) and hard currency (gold), which are integrated into the user experience through psychological triggers such as reciprocity and scarcity. By providing players with an initial soft currency grant, the game encourages early engagement with the shop environment, establishing a baseline for how players interact with the in-app economy before they are prompted to make real-money purchases.
The monetization strategy relies on a tiered pricing structure that mirrors industry standards, specifically observed in titles like Clash of Clans. The game offers various bundles for both currencies, with the most expensive options reaching approximately 100 dollars for 16,500 units of hard currency. A key component of the game’s design is the use of thematic consistency to justify monetization; for instance, wait times for car deliveries or part upgrades are framed as shipping or customs delays. This narrative coherence helps mitigate the friction of pay-to-skip mechanics by grounding them within the game’s automotive restoration theme.
The user experience begins with aggressive onboarding, including requests for social media access and push notifications, which are designed to integrate the player into the game’s ecosystem immediately. The game effectively utilizes background downloads and clear visual cues to manage player expectations regarding wait times. Ultimately, the title demonstrates a sophisticated approach to free-to-play design, prioritizing a consistent, thematic logic that aligns player progression with monetization milestones, thereby encouraging both organic gameplay and premium spending.
