55% of gamers blend campaign progression with open-world exploration.
Research into player behavior within open-world action-adventure games reveals that the vast majority of gamers prefer a balanced approach, blending campaign progression with open-world exploration. Based on a survey of 1,069 valid respondents, approximately 55 percent of players adopt this hybrid style. Only 11 percent of participants prioritize the main campaign exclusively, while roughly 34 percent lean toward open-world activities. These preferences show no significant variability between men and women.
Age serves as a primary demographic differentiator in play style, with younger players more likely to prioritize the main campaign. Conversely, older players gravitate toward open-world exploration or balanced play. This shift may stem from older gamers valuing the extended replayability and organic experiences of open worlds, whereas younger players may find the cinematic structure of linear campaigns more engaging.
Analysis of gaming motivations indicates that players who favor open-world exploration score higher on the Discovery and Completion dimensions, reflecting a desire to experiment and collect in-game assets. In contrast, those who prioritize the main campaign score lower on Fantasy, potentially because linear narratives can restrict player agency and break the immersion of the game world. While not statistically significant, there is a trend suggesting that campaign-focused players also seek higher levels of excitement, aligning with the cinematic, high-stakes nature of main storylines. These findings highlight the industry's shift toward incorporating open-world elements into traditionally linear titles to accommodate diverse player preferences.
