This decision was made to avoid mandatory reliance on PlayVS, a third-party tournament organizer. The IHSA maintains a policy against working with such programs.
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has officially excluded NBA 2K from its 2023 State Series esports competition. This decision stems from the association’s standing policy to avoid partnerships with third-party scholastic esports providers. Because PlayVS holds the exclusive licensing rights to administer NBA 2K tournaments, the IHSA determined that continuing to offer the game would necessitate a third-party arrangement that contradicts its operational model.
The conflict arose when the IHSA sought to maintain internal control over its State Series, which currently serves approximately 175 schools. The association’s esports advisory committee developed specific gameplay rules for titles like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that were incompatible with the standards enforced by PlayVS. Furthermore, the IHSA expressed interest in adding FIFA to its roster, a title not currently supported by PlayVS. Faced with the choice of either partnering with PlayVS to retain NBA 2K or maintaining its independence, the IHSA board opted to remove the game entirely to preserve its autonomy and avoid additional participation fees for member schools.
This development highlights ongoing tensions between state-level scholastic athletic associations and private esports tournament organizers regarding control, licensing, and standardization. While the IHSA successfully conducted its 2022 series without external providers, the licensing landscape for popular titles continues to create friction for organizations attempting to manage their own competitive ecosystems. The situation underscores the challenges of scaling scholastic esports in a fragmented market where third-party platforms often hold exclusive rights to essential game titles.
