See it on page 5The Italian video game industry demonstrated robust economic health in 2017, achieving a total turnover of nearly €1.5 billion. This financial performance was supported by a balanced distribution between hardware sales, which accounted for €428 million, and software revenue, which reached €1.049 billion through a combination of physical, digital, and mobile channels. With a reach of 17 million consumers, the market reflects a mature landscape where action, shooter, and sports titles remain the most popular genres among a diverse player base.
Gaming has become a pervasive cultural activity in Italy, with 57 percent of the population aged 16 to 64 engaging with interactive entertainment across PC, console, and mobile platforms. This widespread adoption is accompanied by a strong emphasis on responsible consumption, evidenced by the high integration of the PEGI classification system. Furthermore, gaming functions as a significant social bridge, as 41 percent of parents with children under the age of 15 actively participate in gaming sessions with their children, utilizing the medium as a tool for family engagement and content oversight.
Industry growth is further bolstered by strategic initiatives designed to foster community and professional development. Major events such as Milan Games Week have become critical touchpoints for the sector, drawing record attendance of 148,000 participants in 2017. Beyond public-facing exhibitions, institutional efforts—including the Italian Video Game Awards and dedicated industry days—serve to facilitate dialogue between stakeholders and support the international expansion of local developers. These collective efforts underscore a concerted push to elevate the profile of the Italian market within the global gaming ecosystem.
