London-based esports marketing firm Hotdrop Limited has initiated liquidation proceedings, resulting in the termination of its entire staff of approximately one dozen employees. Following the layoffs, management issued a directive requiring former employees to return their October salary payments. The company cited payroll inaccuracies, specifically claiming that the payments were processed using outdated information that failed to account for the firm’s closure on October 29, 2024.
Management stated that the return of these funds is a mandatory prerequisite for finalizing insolvency documentation. According to company communications, failure to refund the salary would prevent the completion of necessary paperwork for the Redundancy Payments Service (RPS), a UK government-run system that provides financial support to employees affected by employer insolvency. The company warned that if funds were not returned by the specified deadline, it would initiate a payment recall through its banking provider.
While Hotdrop CEO Heather Dower maintains that the liquidation is intended to protect creditors and ensure all debts are addressed rationally, the process has faced administrative friction. A representative from Kent Insolvency, the firm appointed to manage the liquidation, clarified that the company remains under the control of its director until the formal winding-up process is complete. The situation highlights the complexities of insolvency procedures for small businesses, particularly regarding the reconciliation of final payroll and government-mandated redundancy claims.
