G|A|M|E – The Italian Journal of Game Studies
The authors note that only a small fraction of papers at a major digital games conference address innovation.
This study examines how graphical technologies shaped the video game industry during the 1990s, with particular focus on the transition from 2D to 3D graphics. Its central argument is that graphical technology affects platform success only indirectly: visual innovations matter when they are tied to new gameplay possibilities rather than serving as superficial "eye-candy." The authors respond to a notable gap in academic scholarship, noting that innovation in games remains underexplored, with only a small fraction of papers at a major digital games conference addressing it.
The analysis contrasts the design philosophies of competing platforms. The Super NES, the authors contend, favored the refinement of proven genres such as platformers, role-playing games, and 2D action-adventures, deploying graphical features like Mode 7 and layered backgrounds within familiar formulas. By contrast, early-1990s PC and Sega hardware encouraged experimentation with full-motion video, 3D action-adventure, and the first-person shooter. The study challenges the assumption that genre conventions alone drive technological adoption, drawing on genre theory and art history to argue that new technologies can generate both new visual aesthetics and new forms of play.
The research rests on a corpus of 65 games supplemented by a review of gaming magazines, box art, and manuals, situating its findings within the historical record of the period. Its planned outputs include a monograph on the Super NES and a typology distinguishing graphical innovation from generic innovation. Published in 2013 as part of a scholarly journal issue, the work is grounded in literature on game history, platform economics, and aesthetics, positioning it as a contribution to the historical and theoretical understanding of how visual technology and gameplay co-evolve.
