Game Developers Conference
52% of developers now view generative AI as harmful to the industry.
The 2026 Game Developers Conference (GDC) State of the Industry survey provides a comprehensive analysis of current trends, labor conditions, and technological adoption within the global gaming sector. Based on responses from 2,300 industry professionals, the data highlights a period of significant instability and shifting sentiment regarding emerging technologies.
A central finding is the growing skepticism toward generative AI. While 36% of companies currently utilize these tools—led by ChatGPT at 74%—the perception of their impact has turned increasingly negative. Currently, 52% of developers believe generative AI harms the industry, a sharp increase from 30% in 2025 and 18% in 2024. This trend suggests a deepening concern among creators regarding the long-term professional and ethical implications of AI integration.
The industry also continues to navigate a difficult labor market, with 28% of respondents reporting job losses over the past two years. Game designers have been particularly affected, experiencing the highest layoff rate at 20% over the last 12 months. Despite these challenges, development remains focused on established ecosystems; the PC remains the primary target platform for 80% of developers. Unreal Engine leads the market with a 42% adoption rate, followed by Unity at 30%.
Market dynamics show that 35% of games are independently funded, a figure that climbs to 86% for solo developers. Furthermore, platform interest remains skewed toward the PlayStation 5 and emerging hardware like the Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch 2, which each garner 40% and 39% interest respectively, significantly outpacing the Xbox Series at 20%. These findings underscore a volatile landscape defined by high-pressure work environments, where 59% of professionals work at least 40 hours per week, and a cautious approach to technological disruption.
