These clusters are Action-Social, Immersion-Creativity, and Mastery-Achievement.
Gaming motivations are organized into three high-level clusters, providing a structural framework for understanding player behavior. This model is derived from Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) analysis applied to survey data from over 140,000 gamers across North America, South America, Western and Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, and Australia/New Zealand. The analysis reveals that motivations are not isolated but exist within a proximity map where correlated factors appear closer together.
The three primary clusters identified are Action-Social, which combines fast-paced gameplay with social interaction; Immersion-Creativity, which links narrative, world exploration, and self-expression; and Mastery-Achievement, which encompasses strategic gameplay, challenge-seeking, and the desire for power. Certain motivations act as bridges between these clusters, such as Discovery, which connects Immersion-Creativity to Mastery-Achievement, and Power, which links Action-Social to Mastery-Achievement.
The underlying structure of these motivations is defined by two primary dimensions: a horizontal axis distinguishing between acting on the world versus acting on other players, and a vertical axis contrasting cerebral, long-term gameplay with kinetic, fast-paced experiences. This structural model remains consistent across all geographic regions surveyed. By mapping these relationships, the findings offer a tool for identifying how different gaming motivations correlate, suggesting that while motivations are independent, they often cluster in ways that define distinct player profiles and potential opportunities for game design.
