Poland has emerged as a significant hub for game development within Eastern Europe, characterized by a rapidly maturing industry and a strong domestic player base. As of 2015, the nation holds the 23rd-largest games industry globally. The sector’s economic impact is substantial, with total revenue reaching €262.66 million in 2014, a figure that more than doubles the revenue of its closest regional competitor, Romania.
The domestic market demonstrates a clear preference for PC gaming, which accounts for 35% of the gaming population, while console gaming remains a niche segment utilized by only one in ten players. Mobile gaming on smartphones and tablets captures 28% of the market. Overall, 60% of Polish internet users engage with video games, reflecting a high level of digital entertainment adoption across the country.
The industry is anchored by internationally recognized studios that have achieved both critical and commercial success. CD Projekt Red serves as a primary example, having gained global prominence through The Witcher franchise. Other notable contributors to the Polish development landscape include People Can Fly, known for the Painkiller series and Bulletstorm, and the independent studio 11 Bit, which earned acclaim for the title This War of Mine. These findings, derived from 2014 data provided by Digital Dragons and market analysis from Newzoo, underscore Poland's trajectory as a vital player in the international gaming market.
