Four major Japanese gaming industry organizations, including CESA, JOGA, MCF, and JeSU, have initiated a comprehensive research project to address the classification of gaming disorder by the World Health Organization. The primary objective of this initiative is to develop evidence-based, effective countermeasures through scientific inquiry, ensuring that the industry responds appropriately to growing social concerns regarding excessive gaming behaviors. To maintain objectivity and scientific rigor, the project is overseen by an independent committee of external experts led by Professor Akira Sakamoto of Ochanomizu University, comprising specialists in psychology, medicine, and social research.
The research framework is structured into two distinct phases spanning 2019 and 2020. The initial phase focuses on the development and validation of standardized measurement scales for both adults and children, ensuring that subsequent data collection is accurate and reliable. Following this, the project will conduct a nationwide survey utilizing a visit-and-leave methodology to gather representative data across Japan. This large-scale study aims to determine the prevalence of suspected gaming disorder, identify problematic play patterns, and analyze the underlying risk and protective factors associated with these behaviors.
By establishing a robust empirical foundation, the industry seeks to move beyond speculation and implement informed strategies that support the healthy development of the gaming sector. The findings from these investigations are intended to provide a clear understanding of the current landscape of gaming habits within the Japanese population. The participating organizations remain committed to transparency and plan to provide ongoing updates regarding the progress and outcomes of this research through their official channels.
