Distilling the key insights…
This research explores the development and implementation of an online, game-based library guidance program designed to replace traditional, in-person orientations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Faced with widespread university library closures in 2020, the authors sought to create an accessible, cost-effective alternative to video-based tutorials. By utilizing Google Forms, the team developed "Libardry Form," a mission-clearing role-playing game (RPG) that allows students to navigate virtual library scenarios and learn essential research skills, such as database usage and material location, without requiring specialized software or technical expertise.
The study involved an exploratory trial conducted between September and November 2020, featuring 42 participants, including university students and members of the general public. Findings indicate a strong preference for the game-based format, with 78.6% of respondents favoring it over standard video guidance. Participants noted that the interactive nature of the game, which requires active decision-making, facilitated better engagement and information retention compared to passive video viewing. While the impact on upper-level students was negligible due to their prior library experience, the results suggest that the program significantly improved the understanding of freshmen who had little to no experience with university library services.
The research concludes that while game-based guidance is a viable and popular tool for remote learning, it requires further refinement to address potential misunderstandings and navigation issues. The authors identify a need for improved feedback mechanisms, such as providing hints or explanations when players select incorrect options, and the integration of visual maps to better orient students to physical library layouts. The study suggests that such digital tools serve as an effective bridge for virtual orientation, potentially complementing future in-person library instruction.
