This marks the single largest day for the category in history. The spending occurred across the Apple App Store and Google Play.
Black Friday 2018 marked a historic milestone for the U.S. mobile gaming industry, as consumer spending reached an unprecedented $55.8 million across the Apple App Store and Google Play. This figure represents the single largest day for mobile game revenue in history, reflecting a 23.8 percent year-over-year increase. The growth rate slightly outpaced the 23.4 percent expansion observed between 2016 and 2017, signaling sustained momentum in mobile gaming monetization during major retail holidays.
Revenue distribution favored the Apple App Store, which accounted for $35.2 million, or 63 percent of the total, while Google Play contributed $20.6 million. Despite the higher absolute volume on iOS, Google Play experienced a stronger year-over-year growth rate of 24.7 percent compared to the 23.3 percent growth on the App Store. Games remained a dominant force in the mobile ecosystem, representing 68 percent of total App Store spending and 86 percent of total Google Play spending for the day.
Supercell emerged as a top performer, securing two spots in the top ten grossing titles with Clash of Clans, which led the market with $2.1 million in revenue, and Clash Royale. Epic Games’ Fortnite also demonstrated significant performance, generating $1.2 million exclusively through the App Store—an 86 percent increase over the previous Friday. These results were largely driven by strategic promotional efforts, including limited-time bundles and in-app purchase discounts, which successfully incentivized player spending. Data for these findings was derived from Store Intelligence, providing a comprehensive look at consumer behavior within the U.S. mobile gaming sector during the 2018 holiday shopping period.
